You can find a simple summary of the Christian faith on the ‘Two ways to live’ website.
The fundamental truths revealed in Scripture underlie our understanding of the Christian faith and this stands behind all that we aim to be, do, practise and proclaim as a church.
We are a proprietary chapel of the Church of England, and a formal representation of our faith is given in the Thirty Nine Articles of Religion, The Book of Common Prayer and the Ordinal, albeit in language a lot more old-fashioned than you will find in our services.
We are also wholly sympathetic to the position stated more recently in the Jerusalem Statement of 2008.
Our belief is that this understanding of the Christian faith best represents the central truths of the gospel. This is the basis of our unity, the foundation of our ministry and the content of our message.
The trustees of St John’s Downshire Hill have also passed a resolution under the House of Bishops’ Declaration on the Ministry of Bishops and Priests in order to reflect the church’s convictions on the distinctive ministry of men and women. This is sometimes called “complementarianism”. You can hear a sermon that explains this further here.
